Fascinating article by PewResearch Social & Demographic Trends about the history of racial enumeration and the U.S. Census.

What then would be the ideal here? A category called "Race" but the only choice is "human?"

Ideal? I'm not sure these is one. Based on how the current one is working when it comes to Hispanics, it's almost as if a "cultural identity" is more meaningful then a "racial identity". Ultimately, that is what the question is seeking the way they are currently worded for most people. "Asian and Pacific Islander" is followed with a write-in that allows one to list their cultural affilitation as "Japanese", "Korean", "Samoan", etc. Perhaps the best thing to do is to categorize the various cultures into "racial" classifications behind the scenes and then let people simply pick their cultural identities which for most is more meaningful and easier to answer.

Either way my finely tuned sense of black humor (no pun intended) gets a chuckle out of the current "controversy" because once again a former tool that served the majority has been into a tool for the minority the majority finds the tool offensive. Funny how that works.

I am not sure the majority (of the majority) find it offensive more so than simply stupid..
