The notion that 8th Century Scandanavians were unaware of the British Isles and France is ridiculous. Doubly ridiculous in the case of Danes and Norwegians.
Good point. After the Roman presence in Britain ended in 410, waves of invasion by such tribes as the Saxons, Angles, and Jutes surely would have made the existence and features of the British Isles common knowledge all over the known world nearly 400 years later.
Despite the poster showing a longship the size of a Cleveland class cruiser The Vikings is a terrific picture with humor, exciting action, nice sets, fine photography and a powerhouse cast with Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis, Janet Leigh, Ernest Borgnine, Frank Thring, James Donald and Eileen Way. I watch it about once a year and it's available in HD for free on Amazon Prime streaming.
They said on NPR this morning that "The Bible" was the most watched cable program last weekend, with over 30 million viewers, and they also said "The Vikings" beat out everything else Sunday night on FOX, CBS, NBC or ABC (over 9 million watched).
I rarely watch History Channel these days, as it revolves around reality TV now, and very little actual history. I didn't know about either The Vikings or The Bible until this morning.
I would watch both H2 and The Military Channel if they were offered on the basic Directv package, but neither are. The Military Channel shows some British WWII documentaries that were produced in the 70's, and those are great to watch. Most documentaries shows WWII veterans in their 80's, this one showed WWII vets in their early 50's, and it was strange hearing these guys recount battles from WWII at that age. The British produce far better documentaries on WWII than Americans do. Their insight into what happened just seems to be more keen, less ethnocentric.
Also, the entertaining "Hatfield's and McCoy's" was the most watched program in cable history.
religion has long been a big money maker. In medieval times many a town prospered as tourist attractions ... The lower classes could typically afford perhaps one lengthy vacation trip in their entire lives and they typically used them up going to be awed by one of these sacred wonders.
You think people don't currently make a life's journey to Rome? the Holy Land? Mecca?
There is competition from Disney, Vegas and Hawaii!
I thought the first hour of the Vikings was pretty entertaining, but how about adding some 6 foot blonde women wearing horned helmets. Maybe in future episodes.
You can understand the choice of programming is influenced by the fact that the History Channel is owned by FOX. I made a recording of Vikings and will watch it tonight.
One of the most enduring myths about 8th-11th century Vikings is that they wore horned helmets, something that they never ever did.
I remember reading that fact when I was about 7-years-old in a children's book about Vikings and was really disappointed. I've never really been that interested in the Vikings ever since.
I'm still waiting for a good film or tv show about pirates though...

Warners made a couple of great ones, Captain Blood and The Sea Hawk. IMO those are the best pirate pictures ever and by a wide margin. And Korngold's score for The Sea Hawk is sublime. As is Flora Robson's playing of Elizabeth I in the picture.

Good idea, but please not with Johnny Depp, and since Errol Flynn is not available, having departed more than a half century ago, who would be good in the lead?
