I'm not much a reader most of the time and have usually limited my choices to books about history. I recently finished reading Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer and enjoyed it very much. I know there has been questions about the authenticity of this book, but does anyone know of a similar style read regarding the American Civil War? Would prefer a Confederate point of view, but it is not a deal breaker.

"The Civil War in Pictures" by Fletcher Pratt is an excellent book, don't
be misled by the title, there is tons of relevant text.

If you have the interest in the Civil War that most never hear about, research Henry Hopkins Sibley. His participation was in Texas and New Mexico. Most don't ever think about either States when it comes to the Civil War but the Battle at Glorieta Pass is considered to be the Gettysburg of the West. Here's the Wiki on him with recommended reading at the bottom.
Henry Hopkins Sibley - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

My great great grandfather was with Sibley on the trip into New Mexico and was at the Battle of Glorieta Pass. He was a surgeon in the Union Army and after his plantation was burned to the ground in Virginia by Union troops, he left and came to Texas where he joined the Confederate side. Here's a letter that his wife wrote about their travels.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm really looking for a first person memoir perspective told from the eyes of the common soldier.

There are eleven titles under History on this list:

The 100 greatest non-fiction books | Books | guardian.co.uk

The above is from a source I would trust. The below is not, and is very Americentric, and lists based on reader ratings tend to favor books on politically correct topics, but is also worth checking:

I don't recall the author; it's been over thirty years since I read the book, but Jim Mundy, an admittedly-fictionalized but very accurate account of the career of a Confederate volunteer, was a fine read.

I know you specifically asked for Civil War era books, but if you're ever interested in an earlier time period I'd recommend anything from Sharon Kay Penman. Most (or all?) of her books are about the Plantagenets, starting with Katherine of Aragon and Henry, King John and the Welsh conflicts, Simon De Montfort, King Edward II "Longshanks", and ending with Richard III (which was my favorite of her books, The Sunne In Splendor, about the War of the Roses).

I only mentioned these books because they are probably my favorite historical fiction of all time, along with The Winds of War and War and Remembrance by Hermann Wouk (about WWII).
