from the U.S. perspective, sure.

i think one could argue that the worst fighting in the war was done between the Germans and Russians on the eastern front.

Attack our naval base and we are justified in nuking your cities until you surrender unconditionally. You can make that case. But even if the justification is accepted where does the necessity come from? It was a choice.

Are you nuts!!
I had family and friends who somehow lived through all the killing saw horrible things....once in a while they might talk a little then go into that thousand yard stare carrying emotional scars forever.
You are belitting their sacrifices yes an invasion would of cost US dearly a old marine who survived Okinawa said if we had invaded Japan that he would of been KIA.
Dresden was bombed to where it created a firestorm killing tens of thousands... Tokyo was bombed with incendiary bombs since everything was made of wood same result.
American POW's witnessed the atomic bomb results first hand because the Japanese used them as slave labor in coal mines brutally beating them. The Japanese were fanatics they would of never surrendered in a conventional war.

I don't follow. The demand was always for unconditional surrender. By August 1945, about all Japan would have insisted on was keeping the emperor. Ironically, McCarthur ended up letting him stay on anyway.

Losers of a war they started don't get to set the terms of their surrender, or
decide what is favorable or not to those they have attacked, murdered, tortured,
raped, slaughtered. Youtube: Rape of Nanking.
If war making, rape, murder and torture are reasons to drop nukes then half the world needs nuking.

Was it Japanese soldiers that died or Japanese citizens that died? Where are the war crimes tribunal? Think about it...

When I say eastern front, I'm not talking about Russia - Japan, I'm talking about Germany - Russia.

If I understand correctly, the most horrific parts of WWII took place in Ukraine and Poland.

Yep, and Hitler parlayed that sentiment into "The Stab in the Back" story to help the Nazis gain power.

And?

Japan chose war.

The only duty the US had was to lessen that war's impact on Americans and their allies.

Thank You Harry Truman!
