Jamestown, NY was the boyhood home of the famous naturalist, ornithologist, and artist, Roger Tory Peterson. If you are a birder, you've probably used his guides at one time or another. Peterson

Nearby Frewsburg, NY was the childhood home of Robert H. Jackson, US attorney general, associate justice of the US Supreme Court, and the chief US prosecutor at the Nuremburg war crimes tribunal. Jackson practiced law in Jamestown early in his career. Jackson

Jamestown, NY is the birthplace of comedienne and actress, Lucille Ball, who, along with some of her family members, is buried in Jamestown's Lakewood Cemetery. Ball was raised by her mother and grandparents in nearby Celoron, NY. I Love Lucy

Baseball pitcher Randy Johnson also started his minor league career with the Jamestown Expos in the NY-Penn League, in 1985. There is probably a plaque to that effect in the ballpark.

My favorite Roger Tory Peterson story, when he was getting quite old and his eyesight was failing, he was leading a several day birding group tour somewhere in Central America. One morning he was not feeling well, and excused himself and stayed in bed while the others went out and searched the jungle with their binoculars and telescopes. When they came back, he asked how they had done, and they proudly exclaimed that they saw 48 species of birds. Roger replied "I heard 65 out the window as I was lying in bed."
