It wasn't just Saddam Hussein that had a problem with the Kurds, the Turkish government did/does as well. The Kurds are a large non-Arab minority in Iraq, but whose total number is more like 30,000,000 if you add in those who are a minority in adjoining countries.
Why did Saddam persecute the Kurds so ruthlessly during the late 80s/early 90s as to destroy thousands of their villages and kill 100,000+ of them?
Was he afraid they would secede from Iraq, or help Iran? Or was he just prejudice against their culture?
For the same reason that he "persecuted" the Shia majority... at one time or another they opposed his regime.
