Television: Some people believe that television has harmful effects on its users
Harry Potter: Some thought that it would lead to Satanism.
Really? I was growing up when all the Harry Potter books were coming out, too. Never heard one mention of Satanism...

Polio epidemic of 1957/Polio shots later that same year

"Hoodlums" (which included 18 yr old college men with beards)

Streetcars gone for good (1956)

Annette Funicello (wah-wah-wah wow!)

Model homes with bomb shelters in them

and the most disrupting thing of all: dutch elm disease (our neighborhood never looked the same after that)

Man, how could I have forgotten some of those? Now that you bring them up, I remember that these were big events, (the ones I forgot to mention), (although through a number of those, I was still very young) with the exception of Pac-Man. I didn't realize people were in an uproar over it....maybe because I was too busy playing it on our new Atari 6400! Woohoo! No more Pong for us, we're in the big time now.

Oh, they were out there. They accused Rowling of writing about witchcraft...that she was trying to indoctrinate the kids in to practicing Satanism. Angry "mothers" everywhere. I was not a kid at the time, still young, but I remember all that noise. I laughed because I had read a book or two of the series at that time.
