Telecommunications and ease of access to information advanced far more rapidly then transport technology. That's where they had it wrong, for the most part.

Why don't we have jetpacks and flying cars?

They tended to run into each other or fall out of the sky due to operator error, much more frequently than ground-based transportation.

All the technology in the world has not been able to improve the most failure-prone component: The nut behind the wheel.

Some folks are starting to develop self-driving cars. If they are successful (and eventually they will be), then the jetpacks and flying cars you want, may ultimately become practical.
