The Soviet Union was the last of the four (actually, 3 and "two halves" -- I'll count Italy as one half and Spain / Porugal as the other) absolutist butcher-states which murdered millions between 1930 and 1945, and essentally practiced a "souped up" version of the Political Correctness so popuiar on many campuses and the fantasy world of Hollywood and Madison Avenue today, in those regions where it lingered.
Those of us who believe that freedom of expression and freedom of enterprise are unitary and inseparable recognized over multiple generations that a world can no more exist half-slave and half free than can a nation-state -- that in dealing with Marxist drivel harnessed with the coercive power of an industial state -- extermination (at least in the form of permanent separation from power -- freedom of expression in itself is no threat) is not too strong a remedy to propose.
I shudder to think of what we might still face today if people like Truman, Churchill, Adenauer, Solzhenitsyn, Thatcher, Walesa and Reagan had not stood their ground.

Reagan made things far worse. There is a reason why George Soros is considered the person that put an end to communism by helping organizing the dissident movements that helped start the end of communism in Poland which spread like wildfire and not Ronny Raygun.
Well, I am sure the Soviet Union thought the United States made the Cold War worse!
Imagine what the Russians were thinking. The Berlin Airlift, West Germany, Turkey, Greece, Iran, South Korea, Japan, Afghanistan - Those pesky Americans and their allies keep blocking us and getting in our way!

One thing is certain. The 'War Merchants' (armament suppliers, contractors, et al) and Financiers of both sides, find "Cold War", "Hot War", "Police Action", "Nation Building", "Spreading Democracy" et. al. extremely profitable!

Interestingly enough there were no "financiers" back in Soviet times who would profit from "Cold War" or "Nation Building"
They were working in this field for the love of art.
And what's more interesting, with all the current upheaval in Russia and the big spurt growth in "Nation building" and "Cold War" in connection with Crimea, Putin is gaining political capital while losing profits.
Love of art again, I wonder?
I should point out that I don't subscribe to a lot of Andrew Alexander's views but it is a viewpoint, and no one can deny that both sides did antagonise each other.
In terms of Britain, Churchill never liked the Russians and made no secret of it, however there were also many American politicians especially during the height of the Cold War and Mccarthyism who did not help matters, and as a result a dangerous arms race was set in place, whilst the Soviet Union invaded Eastern Europe to ensure it had control of the region and had a buffer zone from the west and NATO.
Could both sides off sat down earlier and discussed possible solutions like reasonable adults and developed better relations, rather than throwing constant insults at each other, whilst nearly taking mankind to the brink of destruction.???
You can't have a race with less than 2 participants. Both tried to win the arms race. The Soviet Union went broke doing so.
Did we really need to engage in an arms race in the first place.
