Currently, the United States has more than twice Russia's population: 318,000,000 to 145,000,000.

Total male population fit for service: 60,620,143 vs 34,765,736

The United States has the ability to project power anywhere on the planet. The Russians do not.

The United States technical proficiency is far more advanced, too.

Despite some feckless political leadership, the United States has a experienced, battle-tested field leadership throughout its ranks from prolonged fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Russians, aside from a brief war against marginal opposition in Georgia, do not.

According to the Economist of London, The GDP adjusted for purchasing power parity (ppp) of Russia is 2.590 Trillion dollars, and the GDP per capita is $ 12,250. A comparable country is Mexico which has a GDP of $ 2.023 Trillion and a GDP per capita of $ 12,700. Mexico's populatrion is 115 million.
According to the Economist nations that have the same or slightly larger GDPOs than Russia include Germany, France, Great Britain, South Korea, and Brazil.

USA vs Russia? Kinda depends on how many of each nations nukes get through defences to score on the opposing country, I'd say it would take less than a half dozen well placed nukes to entirely destroy Americas infrastructure,It would probably take less to destroy Russias equivalent infrastructure. Dealing with around 8000 nukes apiece life as we know it would be over as we turn the Earth into radioactive slag. Remind me again of what point was trying to be made..

Iraq and Afghanistan have the governments we put in place after the invasions, so I am not sure how you come to the conclusion that we lost there. In Vietnam our military operations were usually successful, but the length of the war made it unpopular and the people demanded the troops be brought home before the job was done. Also we fought that war halfheartedly as we were afraid to really go after the north because of China. Yes we lost that war, but we lost it because of politics not because the enemy had better fighting men, or better equipment. Our military is the best in the world and it has been since the second world war. I am not suggesting that a war with Russia would go well, its such a big country and history has shown it is too large to really conquer. No one has ever done it, we may be no different. Having said that I don't believe the Russians could conquer us either. Our military is too good to allow that, and our geography is on our side. Oceans protect us, and the only logical route for them is through Alaska and Canada. That is some rugged mountainous terrain, not many roads so this would favor American and Canadian defenders. Not a chance they could pull that off. Red dawn was a good movie, but it is fiction and always will be. The commies are not gonna drop out of the clear blue sky, they are not coming through Canada or Mexico, they simply do not have the ability to do it. For one thing the Russian Navy is no where near large enough to support that kind of invasion. Where the Russians are a threat is in eastern Europe, and that is where we need to be concerned about them. NATO needs to stand tall against the bully Putin.

Every army that has ever lost a war blamed it on the politicians. Regarding Vietnam, I would suggest reading General Giap`s book. A country that`s determined to be their own country will fight the invading force forever if that`s what it takes. The Vietnamese expelled the Chinese twice and they sent the French packing too. Giap said there was never a sense of urgency and if it took 100 years of sending Americans home in body bags that`s what they were prepared to do. The only way for us to win would have been through genocide.

Default Could US win a war vs Russia?

Since we didn't "win" in Nam, Iraq, or Afghanistan, the answer should be extremely obvious.

In all three cases, we DID manage to almost completely wreck those three nations while suffering no ill effects at home. We lost so many lives and flushed so many trillions of dollars down the toilet to accomplish that, though. Yet, way too many current office holders still cling to the notion that war is a "solution" of some sort.
