As Upton Sinclair noted Fascism will come in the United States wrapped in the Stars and Stripes, holding a Bible and with a nice serving of Moms Apple Pie.
And you know I'll just add that it would also come with that so-called 'big' idea. Marry that say with a demagogue or group of demagogues, add small then increasing physical and psychological assaults, then deal with the resulting challenges by 'quieting' leaders of institutions and the rest of the 'dissident' population with intimidation eventually running up to outright execution if the demand for obeisance isn't met.

On March 29, 1936, Goebbels, Reich Propaganda Minister, proudly announced that in a referendum where voters were to indicate their support where 'the restoration of the German's people honor' as achieved by the occupation of the Rhineland, 99% voted for Hitler and the NSDAP. But by then after all the years of terror, intimidation and ignoring laws, some Germans by then knew that even the polling places were rigged. From then on, no doubt each German had to decide for themselves how far their courage would go in that NSDAP state. And desperate and tragic times were ahead then for Europe and the world.

Well actually, that is not going too far. If a war was one you started by invading other nations and doing horrible things to their people, then what is the point of honoring your war dead decades later once you learned how bad your actions were at that time? What are you honoring? They died for a terrible, nasty cause that is not honorable. It's like Japan honoring their WWII war dead- it aggravates China because their war included invading China and trying to take it over, while mass murdering large numbers of Chinese and raping countless women there. So when you honor those war dead, you are honoring people who fought for that cause- NOT a good thing to do!
