Its not really a question that can be answered with any certainty and I am not really sure its a question that needs answered. Its one of those endearing mysteries attached to Old Hickory. I don't think he knew exactly himself.
It reminds me a bit of historical census research when you see the column (mother or Fathers birthplace) marked as Don't Know.. It was not uncommon even 100 years ago to not know where your mom or dad was born because they probably didn't even know either.
We went to the Waxhaw museum and Jackson birthplace directly on the NC/SC border. I believe he was technically born at an uncle's house on one side of the line but lived on a farm on the other side of the border - not very far from each other.
This question has been under debate for a LONG period of time, what do y'all think?
Honestly, I don't know, and I don't think that we can say for sure without more evidence.
