A boatload of tobacco goes to Africa, in exchange for a boatload of slaves, slaves come to the U.S., work in the tobacco plantations. and boatloads of tobacco to Europe.

Part of the explanation!

Interesting list compiled by guessing the religious and ethnic background based upon the names. Take James De Wolf of the Rhode Island De Wolfs, considered the most prominent slaver in American history. De Wolf and Dutch American was not only NOT Jewish, he was an Episcopalian a member and benefactor of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church. Another major American slaver was John Carter Brown - hardly a Jewish name - namesake of Brown University was a Baptist.
The De Woolfs were Jewish.
We aren't saying no Gentiles were also in the slave trade.

Mystery of Va.'s First Slaves Is Unlocked 400 Years Later

The first to reintroduce the slave trade to the West were Muslims. Slavery had been exterminated in Christendom by about 1000 AD, but was rekindled around 1400 AD by Muslim slave traders who provided slave labor to Portuguese sugar plantations off the coast of Afirca.

Slavery was once again quashed in Christendom with the Ciivl war, but remained legal in Saudi Arabia until 1960.

Spanish were the first European colonial power to have slavery in their New world colonies and conquered lands. They had reached mainland North America in the early 1500s.

Jews also had significant influence in slavery and trade

Many of the "Dutch" colonizers and traders were often Dutch Sephardi Jews that would defend and conduct affairs for the Netherlands in colonial pursuits and exploits. Many of the leaders of various empires and colonies were often Jewish.

Perhaps we should look at this also.

"Slave trading was a major feature of Jewish economic life in Surinam which as a major stopping-off point in the triangular trade."

"The Jews were the recipients of favorable charters containing generous economic privileges granted by the Dutch West Indies Company in Amsterdam. The economic life of the Jewish community of Curacao revolved around ownership of sugar plantations and marketing of sugar, the importing of manufactured goods, and a heavy involvement in the slave trade, within a decade of their arrival, Jews owned 80 percent of the Curacao plantations."

Jewish Involvement In Black Slave Trade To The Americas

"The New World location where the Jews played the largest role in the slave-trade was in the Caribbean and Suriname, most notably in possessions of Holland, that were serviced by the Dutch West India Company. The slave trade was one of the most important occupations of Jews living in Suriname and the Caribbean. The Jews of Suriname were the largest slave-holders in the region.

The only places where Jews came close to dominating the New World plantation systems were Curaçao and Suriname. Slave auctions in the Dutch colonies were postponed if they fell on a Jewish holiday. Jewish merchants in the Dutch colonies acted as middlemen, buying slaves from the Dutch West India Company, and reselling them to plantation owners. The majority of buyers at slave auctions in the Brazil and the Dutch colonies were Jews.

Jews played a "major role" in the slave trade in Barbados and Jamaica.
Jewish plantation owners in Suriname helped to suppress several slave revolts in the period 1690 to 1722.

Liverpool coincidentally is home to Britain's oldest surviving black community and population. Most black Liverpudlians are descendants of blacks that came to Britain as far back as the 1500s and 1600s and in some cases even earlier back into ancient times.

My 8th grade science teacher told us blacks didn't mind being slaves. She hardly ever taught science, mostly talking about her family or warning us not to use ammonia unless the windows were open. And our school was the best grade school in the city, except for the Catholic schools which were the best of all.

I didn't think it was very important, one way or the other. This was 1964 and slavery was ended 100 years ago so all this stuff seemed as relevant as the Roman Empire.
