Were it not for the cultural attributes of skilled musicians and tradesmen (like brass work), they would have been exterminated a long time ago. Also of note, they went through Iran and the Byzantine Empire, but got a leap by the Turkish expansion. As others have stated, the borders were fairly closed to them. , at least temporarily became 'Muslim' in those countries, reaping the rewards.
Culturally, few groups come close to a native attention to musical detail, Jean Reinhardt for example. Not only are their settled Gypsies, but there are tribes of metalworking, musical, and other skills. Gypsies of other tribes are not accepted until a lengthy examination and getting to know you phase, with some common threads, IIRC.
For instance in Bulgaria 2001, I met a group led by a brother, who was sent by McGill University to record one such group living in Macedonia. The sister had her purse snatched and the brother yelled in Gypsy some choice words. The three Gypsies were shocked, stopped, laid down the purse politely, and gently sulked away, it was reported.
Perhaps instead of using mythology to discuss the history of the Romani, we
would all be better served in a history forum to educate ourselves about the
HISTORY of the Romani rather than starting another derogatory thread about
people that we know little or nothing about by asserting their failings as an
ethnic groups without even the most perfunctory examination of their actual
history.
Now wouldn't that be a landmark occasion for the history
forum?
You know I'd suggest that the further the Roma pushed to the West away from their ancestral lands the attitudes to them have hardened to the extent that European societies mostly vilify them now. The Roma of course do not 'assimilate' into other cultures easily. Now I'd think that this will get much much worse now that with the ascendant of some far-right political parties in European couintries where their programs have an xenophobic position when it comes to foreigners or to ethnic and cultural groups who are 'different'. In fact some those parties broadcast their racist views right out in the open. All in all, it looks like fear fuels the aggressive attitudes.

Slavs, Turks, and dozens of others "pushed to the West away from their ancestral lands", and no one vilifies them.

Don't you love the arranged marriages? It's not that arranged marriages are bad, it's just when the bride and groom are 12 and 13 years respectively.
Don't certain cultures practice female circumcision?
It isn't racist to enact laws and punish such cultures openly by the international community, but someone demanding that nomads cease living a nomadic life-stye is racist.
I guess you don't see the hypocrisy of your position.

Mircea..
The point of my post was to note the fact that a negative 'singling-out' of certain popultions of ethnic/cultural groups in various European societies are on the upswing. The Roma are one of these. Attacks will surely increase on them. History has proven that vilifying ethnic minorities can result in bad things happening.
