The US fought it's last total war between 1941 and 1945. We have not won any major conflicts since then with our limited war strategy.

Well the USA dropped more bombs on North Korea than were dropped in all of the Pacific Theater. 2 million people out of a population of 9 million in North Korea perished (2 million people in Japan died in WWII out of a population of 70 million). Almost all cities in North Korea were destroyed and the devastation was far beyond what Japan suffered in WWII. The devastation was so widespread that the US didn't even have targets in North Korea. I don't know about you but I don't think total war tactics helped the US win the Korean War. The devastation did help North Korea completely restructure its society however to become even more oppressive and more Orwellian so the US can feel good about that.
