Using such slavery as an excuse for laziness and crime is becoming extremely passe. Yes get over it. We are tired of hearing the constant crying, especially from white lamebrain liberals. Nobody today had anything to do with slavery, so I don't even care about it. Blacks that dwell on historic events like slavery and use it to cover personal shortcomings do harm to blacks that are motivated and have been successful. For Christ sakes, it ended years and years ago. Things happened!
Non blacks also have to get over slavery as well, as many non blacks bring it up to vilify blacks or use it to put down others at times. The issue is not really slavery, but rather Jim Crow. JIM CROW is the elephant in the room. Jim Crow survivors of all races are still alive today. Jim Crow was a 20th century manifestation.

White people have done more in history than any other people to right their historic wrongs. You have to pretend that it is not so to maintain your delusions about the pathologies that we see in the black community, but it is factual.

There is no excuse what-so-ever for the ongoing pathologies that we see. None. The first step to getting better is admitting the problem. Please do so.

No such thing as White Privilege unless legislated or actively enforced by the community. While White Privilege existed during Jim Crow, What we have mostly is Majority privilege. Those that are the biggest population get the most recognition. This contrasts with White Privilege in Latin America where the White minority is overrepresented in the media. In the US, while White is seen more, minorities are actualy overrepresented in the media.

Too many people confuse burdens with privileges. A privilege is an advantage given, that is beyond what one would have if segregationary tactics weren't involved. A burden is the opposite. If a White person would get a bank loan at 10% in an all White neighborhood, and then some Blacks and Asians moved in and the Asian gets it at 10% as well, while the Black person gets it at 12%, that is a Black Burden, not a White privilege.

I constantly hear how Whites have a privilege because they can go into a store and not be followed by suspicious sales reps, or because they can hail down taxis. That is not a privilege. That is a standard. If there were twenty people out there of non Black and Non-White ancestry, and all were being ignored by Cabbies, and then one White person hailed a cab and all Cabbies stopped for him, then it would be White privilege.

The vast majority of White Americans do not have privileges. In fact, the stigma created because they supposedly have all these privileges has been exploited by the elite for centuries. First with petty privileges, during slavery, reconstruction and Jim Crow, that led to a huge divide and conquer success, and now by both race card mongers and White liberal apologist mongers alike. Race card mongers use petty perceptions of superiority to foment separatism to a disenfranchised population, and White apologists, seek to bolster their standing among Non-Whites by pointing the finger and claiming all types of supposed privileges for even the poorest Whites.

It has created a vicious circle. Who wants to grow up being vilified by the media as innately privileged, and evil, through no wrongdoing of their own? Especially when they are poor and struggling with their own burdens? White Nationalism, at its heart, is a group of people who has lost a lot of its ethnic heritage through massive multigenerational inter and intra-national migration.
Most have no idea of their roots, except for a vague European. And to celebrate that identity: Whiteness/Europeanism, is immediately branded as racism. Yet every other group is allowed to celebrate some sort of ethnic pride. Ethnic pride is not something evil if it isn't compounded with ethnocentrism, xenophobia, prejudices and scapegoatism.
But if it is not allowed to exist in a healthy state, it will exist in an unhealthy one.

You can't dam a river without an outlet.

Every White kid who is vilified growing up is a potential racist. And it has nothing to do with what his parents taught him and everything to do with a self defense mechanism from being accused every day of doing the evils that people who just happened to look like them perpetrated over a half century ago.

This is no different than White Supremacists here who blame all Blacks or all Hispanics for the misdeeds of miscreants within their group.

White Apologists are as much to blame for this vicious circle of hate, as are White Supremacists, Black Supremacists, Nation of Aztlan, etc.

So how can the American society overcome the racial hang ups that whites and black have, if we continue to teach something that only encourages blacks to shame and guilt white people?

The racism whites face on a day to day basis is a result of teaching blacks that it's okay to feel angry over slavery. And the fact that affirmative action exists is enough. That's a reparation in itself. Not only that but blacks have the black panthers and NAACP, all of which work to benefit blacks and provide them with equal opportunities.

Let's be honest: in the US, the teaching of slavery goes on year after year after year. When you've heard it once, you've heard it all. Hearing it for 10+ years in grade school won't change whatever a child is being taught at home. And it won't somehow make the world any more peaceful or anymore violent.

So yes, overall I do believe that blacks should forget about it. Ensure that the young minds of tomorrow receive clean slates that allow them to determine their own success.
That way they won't carry the baggage of their ancestors.

I actually don't understand why anyone would be hurt or cry over what their ancestors went through. Seems kind of far fetched to me. I actually never cried while learning about slavery. It doesn't make me sad because I have no emotional attachment to it.

Honestly, blacks have nothing to lose by forgetting about what they've never gone through or experienced themselves. Unless you were a slave or slave owner, then why would you try to make the experiences of other people, your experiences?
Agreed, however, 20th century Jim Crow segregationism is what caused the issues, hang ups, & sense of entitlement!

Every time blacks take steps to "forget" or "get over it", then the WHITE MAN always finds a way to derail things. Why?? Why can't whites in this country leave black people alone??

Why don't they mess with the hispanics, native americans or asians??

Why do they always want to have their foot on the throats of black people?

I need a white person to tell me this, preferably someone born before 1975.
A better question to ask is this: "Exactly what is the purpose of the black man/woman in this country?"

From as early as the late 1500s to the mid-to-late 1800s, it was for the sole expressed purpose of unpaid labor, under the employ of the Southern planter class and under the watchful eye of those who, if it weren't for said black labor, would be servants themselves (indentured or no).

From the late-1800s to the 1960s, they were a source of extraordinarily cheap labor, usually performing menial tasks that whites either did not traditionally take on or asked too much money to perform. Black Americans were also seen as a source of "stress relief" for men and women who'd otherwise take their frustrations out on more deserving targets like the wealthy and political leaders.

From the 1960s and onward, no one quite knew what to do with black Americans, except to convert them back into a dirt-cheap source of labor via the prison-industrial complex and the attendant schools-to-prisons pipeline. As evinced by recent news, blacks are still a source of "stress relief" and scapegoating for problems that people would otherwise confront the wealthy and political leaders with.

To keep black Americans in their pre-ordained roles as punching bags and sources of dirt-cheap (or unpaid) labor, the business interests instrumental in bringing captured Africans across the waters had to rely on the human fear of difference and a bushel of nasty preconceived notions to keep their chattel as segregated from others who'd join them in solidarity for fairer wages and fairer treatment.

To keep their own consciences from eating them alive over holding other human beings in bondage, the business interests and planter class simply thought of blacks as less-than-human. Some attempted to justify their actions through faulty biblical interpretations (such as the "Curse of Ham"). Others indulged in hatreds that often lasted for generations and corroded the souls of those harboring said hatreds.

An entire system had to be built in order to control this labor pool from the onset and to curb their ambitions in the event that they were no longer under bond. During Reconstruction, the Southern planter class were threatened by the political power gained by black freedmen and the potential loss of their wealth and prestige - hence the vicious backlash against Reconstruction and the imposition of Jim Crow throughout the Deep South.

Even today, enough remnants of that system remain to significantly impact black society in a number of horrific ways. That's why it seems as though whites can't leave their black counterparts alone in this country. Because it would mean losing massive amounts of prestige, wealth and privilege, even for the poorest white person living a hand-to-mouth existence in the pockmarked valleys of West Virginia coal country.

Here is my 2 cents. I am from Africa. Troyfan, your are right in your statements, "Blacks who come to America from other countries do better than blacks that are born here. I think it's because they don't have the sense of victimology that seems to afflict so many American blacks. They just get on with their lives."
I've noticed how foreign immigrants, Africans included, are often used as a "check" of sorts against the "native-born" black population in America. Mainstream America also has a common habit of pointing at these immigrants and telling blacks "See? These guys came here with nothing and were able to make something of themselves without whining and crying. Why can't you be more like them?"

It conveniently sidesteps America's own ingrown racial issues while blaming blacks for their own condition yet again.

Nevermind that 1)immigrants to the U.S. are either the wealthiest or the most motivated of their respective ethnic group, and 2)the aforementioned remnants of a system designed to lock black bodies to cheap labor aren't aimed at their African counterparts (but it can laser-target them if need be - such is the flexibility of this system).

So other ethnic groups get played against black Americans, for the purpose of keeping black America as marginalized, paralyzed and focused on its own shortcomings as possible.

Actually, white Americans do have privileges.

They have the privilege of knowing that, no matter their socioeconomic stratum, they'll never be treated with the callous disregard or outright malice that black Americans have often been treated throughout their time in this country, save for those whites who fall outside of acceptability (avowed leftists, liberal-minded protesters, criminals, political enemies and terrorists, etc).

For some people, that's more than enough privilege.

Good for you. You want a cookie or something? A pat on the back from black Americans everywhere? And what exactly are these "pathologies" you speak of?

It's ridiculous to forget parts of history just because one feels no more is to be learned from our mistakes.

Not to mention it's hard to erase slavery when white men are still calling black men "Nig--" around this country. Good luck getting rid of that.

Jim Crow use to be used as a racial slur after black face performances surfaced, eventually it was used to encompass laws passed against blacks. To this day Koreans still use Jim Crow black face and yes, people still get upset.

To this day, some people just won't let this die out. It's burned in the memory of the world. Good luck erasing it all!
