Actually CBS owns the rights and the production company. You can see every episode on their online library. NBC wasn't fond of Spock either, and the money sorts instantly vetoed Number One. Gene produced the pilot to his standards, not the suits. Spock was intended to just be part of the crew, and a visible alien presence. I'd have loved to see her as a competent second in command over our favorite nurse to make fun of.
I watched all of those shows and if someone showed the origional Outer Limits again I'd be right there. Watched some of the TZ marathon on the Los Angeles station I get on Dish.
Star Trek was produced by Desilu Studios and was as you noticed sold at a later date to CBS (after Star Trek had wrapped up by its owners Desi Arnez and Lucille Ball. Hence the name DesiLu.

Yes, I wrote handfulls of letters to NBC after they cancelled it after the second season. Gene also got a carte blanch on the pilot, and fought for the things he wouldn't put up with, like not keeping Uhura. He was much ahead of his time and wanted his show to be about tomorrow, not yesterday. I wonder what it would have been if he'd been able to do the show he wanted.
Our letter campaign is noted as one of the first big outpouring from fans, organized by one person who made calls to people who made calls. It was one of the first oupourings of what is now called social media. Then look at the shutdown of CBS programming for a week we did with Jericho. The thing is it grew on its own, and had videos and online articles and was extremely creative. But what got the third season were the hand written letters.
TV is a part of out culture and sometimes a story catches deep and becomes very meaningful and entirely on their own people become a wave, showcasing how people themselves can be heard. That's what only a few tv shows have done and an amazing demonstration of organic growth of a goal.
I wasn’t even born until season 2, but I loved Star Trek, I have watched all of the series. At first it was hard not to compare it to the Original Series, but I was able to watch each show for what it was. I never finished voyager, but I am going back through all of the episodes on Netflix; once I get up to Voyager I will finish the series out.
Dang, Dish doesn't carry either. On Air is very iffy here. Just dump a few shopping channels and so forth and bring in some stations I'd want to watch.
I was born after Star Trek premiered, but I graduated High School before the ST:TNG series began, so my whole childhood, the original show was all I knew. I loved it.
