We shoot of fire works and drink copious amounts of beer on July 4th every year, celebrating an underdog defeat the worlds most powerful naval and military force... we don't apologize for that. Britain burned down DC 200 years ago; I don't think we're still mad about it (I hope not).
It's too soon to joke about the burning of the White House in 1814....the emotional scars are still there and some of us still need to come to grips with it.

The Americans burnt Toronto, burning Washington was a reprisal.
That was to the point.
During the War of 1812, both Toronto and Washington DC were fairly new settlements with small populations. But Toronto was a backwoods provincial capital at the time while Washington DC was the national capital of a nation of 7 million people. So it has always seemed to me to be way out of proportion to justify the burning of Washington because of the burning of Toronto.
It would be like if the Americans tried to burn down London and justifying it because of what happened to Washington.
As it turns out, Americans don’t like being reminded that British troops once set fire to the White House.
After joking about the anniversary of British troops invading Washington, D.C., and burning the White House in 1814, the British embassy in D.C. apologized Sunday night.

If you are going to give a reprisal then make it matter.
