Today: Hurricane Erin:

Hurricane Erin was expected to make landfall in NYC during the morning hours of 9/11. Hurricane Erin would have made landfall within the Tri-State area with 120MPH winds (Cat 3). Hours before Tower #1 was hit, a very strong high pressure knocked the storm out and Erin made a sharp NW turn. Would 9/11 be different if Erin hit?

Well, all the flights would have been cancelled and they would have simply chosen a different day.

Flights 11 and 175 took off around 8:00AM, the hurricane was expected to hit about an hour after Tower #1 was hit.

Hurricane Erin was never expected to hit the East Coast. The track is deceiving - it suggests that the turn to NE was unexpected. But it wasn't. Not so much was a Hurricane Watch was even issued for anywhere in the United States. The turn NE was fully expected.

If, for whatever reason, it had not turned then flights out of all the airports used in the attacks (Boston, Newark and Washington Dulles) would likely have been cancelled. Just the cancellation of the Newark flight would have probaly resulted in a mission abort, to be rescheduled for one week later (a Tuesday morning was specifically chosen because that time offered the fewest occupied seats on average of any time during weekly business hours - fewer passengers being easier to control).

About the only change would have been that the phrase nine-eighteen instead of nine-eleven would have entered the vernacular.

.
Unless....the hijackers took the arrival of the storm as a sign from above that the Christian God was more powerful than Allah, and consequently abandoned not only the mission, but all of their Islamic beliefs. They would have then applied for permanent residency in the US, half of them would have received government assistance to attend colleges, the other half would have become cab drivers in New York.

Hurricanes are intense low pressure areas because air is rising near the core and sinks in the outflow region where it warms as it sinks and accounts for why just before and after a major hurricane passes it is clear skies , warm and nice with low winds. Just as it was the morning of Tuesday September 11 2001 where the skies were clear cloudless over the east coast from Virginia to Boston and it was a prefect day until 8:43 am when Flight 11 struck the North Tower. It was the perfect day for a novice pilot to fly a plane into a skyscraper using visual flight wih unlimited visiblity.

Okay, I see you're from upstate New York, so your exposure to hurricanes is nil. Hurricanes are enormous, disruptive weather patterns encompassing hundreds of miles, sometimes even a thousand. So if a hurricane was expected to hit, they are referring to a landfall. But the torrential rains and high winds would have preceded it by hours and hours, causing total chaos in the northeast.

Well.. Here's the other thing that noone seems to have mentioned.. Playing along with the theory of it..

The only flight that was likely to have been cancelled would have been Flight 93 out of Newark.

There's a chance that Boston would have had flights cancelled or delayed, but.. Probably not. Dulles flights I can't see would have been cancelled by it.. All the flights were heading to the west coast.. so, as long as the base airport wasn't affected.. No real change. Perhaps they change from hitting the WTC and multiple planes hit the pentagon.. But, there's tons of what-ifs.. Seth MacFarlane was scheduled to be on Flight 11 and missed the flight.. We'd have only 3 seasons of Family Guy if he hadn't had a hangover that morning.

So.. All I can think is that 40 fewer people would have died, and we'd have had 5 people in prison over the attacks, at best.

There's always the chance that they would have pushed to another date, which.. Who knows what would happen at that point.

I used to live in CT, and went through Hurricane Sandy.
