All Portuguese were doing was converting people to Christianity, force them to speak their language and grab as much land as possible.
It was basically accept our religion and rules or die.
Dutch were already a lot more developed, we didn't care that much about other people's religion, all we cared about was trade, getting money out of it without letting the local population starve to death. Well organized ports on convenient locations and a stable relation with the locals was more important to us. World domination was never a goal, maybe if we were a lil bit tougher/senseless we could have taken half of the world.
It changed during the centuries. In the 15th and 16th centuries definetly Portugal, after that they went into a period of decline, and the Dutch began their rise and fall.
The Ottoman's? I don't see them as a colonial empire at all, just expansive within their own geographical location. After the 17th century, they likewise became "the sick man of Europe".
Yeah, and if that legacy is piri-piri chicken--Portugal definitely wins...
