There are at least two stories:
1. A (the?) purpose of the raid was gather up some sort of radar hardware for British and American intelligence, supposedly successful.
2. The intelligence mission was to gather up code books for the new four drum Enigma machine, which may or may or may not have been successful. (Possibly two stories, here).

I have read the Stephenson book about Intrepid for story 1. and only read about the O'Keefe revelations for story 2, although Stephenson does make mention about a failed break-in attempt to gather intelligence, which was not successful, and why may relate to the success of story 2.

I have no doubt that there are better informed people than myself about these theories and theories about their truth. On the other hand, truth may be stranger then fiction, and thus harder to uncover, when it comes to the operations of BSC and the OSS both of whom were known to write fictitious documents for "official" consumption and to keep Churchill and/or Roosevelt in the dark about some of their operations.

it's hard to know what to believe.

Please forgive, and do pander to me, if this has already been covered in previous threads.
