No subject in the world is more interesting than history.

Every topic has a history associated with it.

History holds the secrets to everything.

99.9% of historical evidence has been lost forever. Nothing is more exciting than the discovery of historical evidence that has been forgotten or believed lost.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Studying historical events and processes can help you to comprehend the present and to predict the future.

History is what tells us how we got to where we are, and how not to go the dark places. If we look and listen. I find it utterly fascinating, especially over an extended time period, seeing how one small event can have such huge results over time.

We live in a world made by history. We should teach and talk about it and respect it so much more. But it is true you cannot escape it.

You know from my perch I'm afraid I don't see that our educational institutions put a great deal of importance in the study of history. I do see them pumping much into science and math though. Really I can see the emphasis in terms of its advantage in say developing technologies etc but I wouldn't like to see history get short changed. I'd say it's important too.Knowing where you've been helps in figuring out where you may be going...;-)...

That's unfortunately true. It won't get you a job worth a mansion so its not important. And don't 'waste' your time with a history degree. But history is what teaches us about our past and our past mistakes so we don't have to repeat them over. Not to mention it shows how human beings can adjust to new realities without giving up. It's not just about the events of the past, but about the things they say about humanity, good and bad.

Re: 'It won't get you a job worth a mansion so is not important'

Yeah kind of goes to the mantra of being supremely 'practical' in choosing a career and livelihood today.

Makes me also think of what's the focus of a college/university education today? In earlier times one went to school to learn and investigate the 'liberal arts'. In effect, it was a 'general' approach to human learning about the world. In contrast it looks as if the thrust of education orientation today is towards complete specialization. I'm probably a bit facetious here but I have the feeling that some 7 yr olds already want to be neurosurgeons when they grow up. As for a 'historian? An ancient profession where one spends days and nights buried under reams of browned and 'foxed' paper within the dusty library stacks..........;-)....

Nice way of putting it. And it follows that bad stuff can happen from NOT knowing history or being lazy to understand its significance in humanity's development.
