I want to correct you that the Eastern Ukrainians didn't and do not want to be annexed by Russia. The Donbass separatists are nothing but ruthless opportunists and often criminals. Only 20-25% of the Donetsk and Luhansk oblast residents wants to join Russia, according to the last polls which could be carried out. Ethnic Russians are also a minority in those areas.

You are making a big mistake in your reasoning. I saw local people in my city occupying the centre of the town with russian flag in 2014. Lots of people wanted to join Russia like Crimea without any military actions. But Russia didn't want to take eastern part of Ukraine, but only wanted to distract Kiev and West from the Crimea problem. We understood it very clear here and we temporarily gave up fighting then.
The truth is that we've never had common history with West part of Ukraine whose ideological followers came to Kiev after 22 february 2014. There were a few common heroes in the history, but there were lots common enemies especially after 2 world war. It is not easy to glue, but it is easy to destroy.
