Most of the best pirates were from South Wales and the West Country.

The most successful pirate of the era, by a long shot, was Bartholomew Roberts.

It would be interesting to hear your definition of the word ”best” in the context of pirates.

Roberts (Show person) was indeed a very successful pirate if counting the prizes he took, but his career lasted only from June 1719 to February 1722. This is perhaps pretty average for the pirate captains, but compare it to Oliver Levasseur (Show person), who was active between 1716 and 1730.

The fact that it was so short makes his achievements even more impressive.

These are two interesting pirates, but very different from each other. Most crews elected their captains by voting, which also means that the crew could vote for another captain if they were unsatisfied. The pirate captains were usually strong leaders and much liked persons. Roberts is a good example, who was elected captain when Davis (Show person) was killed.

And, it is true that his short career made him even more impressive! I can imagine that the crew was very satisfied of his high hit-rate of prizes.

Gow, on the other hand, seems to have controlled his crew by fear. There are several notes of crew members sneaking off, leaving the crew and Gow. And I don’t think I have heard off that many pirates returning to their home towns to plunder them.
