The fall of Saigon was 40 years ago. What are your feelings about the Vietnam War and have they changed over the years?

Waste of effort. But I have the benefit of hindsight,

At the time stopping the Red Threat seemed appropriate.

A total waste that accomplished nothing but death and destruction with the commies ultimately winning it all after we finally figured out it wasn't worth it and came home.

Pretty much that.

Ike picked the wrong hoss to back, but he couldn't stomach another alliance with a communist.

RIP Gary, Steve, & Butch.

Getting sucked into supporting the Diem family dictatorship in South Vietnam really put the U.S. on the wrong foot. I guess we picked what we thought was the lesser of two evils. It seems our intervention only secured the Communist takeover of three countries as a result which lasted for decades.

It was an unjust war of choice that murdered innocent people.
There are those who speak against it, but only because the U.S. lost.
It is those who speak and spoke against it on principle who are to be commended.

When was the last time a new movie came out about the Vietnam War? When was the last time there was a political discussion on TV about it? That's important because I think the Vietnam movies and the political discussions in the 80's and 90's demonstrated the importance of having a clear mission and exit strategy. Look at the difference in the two Iraq Wars. The leaders of the second Iraq War clearly forgot the lessons of the Vietnam War.

Being a Vietnam era veteran , the main thing that sticks in my mind is how terrible all servicemen were treated by not just the protestors but by civilians as a whole.

That was a dark side of the American people I hope we never see again

Totally agree. I can't think of any positive return for all the lives, resources, and money spent over there. All we did was postpone the inevitable for 15 years.

The returning soldiers were the ones available to the protesting public, versus the inaccessible politicians that were really responsible. It was easier to spit on the G.I.'s than the President or members of Congress. But that's no excuse for bad treatment of soldiers that for the most part had no choice in the matter.

I didn't have it happen to me personally when I came home from there, but I knew a few friends who did experience it. Left a pretty bad taste in their mouth for a long time. Rightfully so.
