Correct me if I'm wrong, but both Carter and Ford were considered 'in the middle'; Carter being the moderate, southern, pro-deregulation Democrat, while Ford was the moderate, northern Republican, which may have put McGovern in the position of voting for the 'lesser of two evils' at the time!

Yes; correct! Indeed, most of the South actually voted for Jimmy Carter--the Democrat--back in 1976!
