On this day in 1945 the Allies formally accepted Nazi Germany's unconditional surrender, marking the end of WWII in Europe. The surrender was offered by Grand Admiral Karl Donitz, who became president of Germany following Hitler's suicide days earlier.
In Russia it's celebrated on the 9th, and is a much bigger holiday than here. I have been in Moscow and in Kiev for Victory Day, quite a spectacle - parades, flowers on graves, general milling around after the parade in Red Square.
Let us also remember V-J Day when September second rolls around.
