English explorers on the other hand were very civilized, they were Buddhist and contemplative.
The only Indians they killed was because they moved around a lot and they had to be counted.

Come on...I seriously doubt that the English were Buddhist...Why did the Indians have to be counted...I don't think there was a census at that time...and if they stayed put they would not be killed.. duh???? Please get serious and stop posting this utter nonsense

O.K. Thyra ... since you are an expert at early Germania and Scandanavia why do you think that the Runic alphabet faded out? Was it do too the spread of christianity brought on by the latin speaking/writing monks etc.

Now,now, I'm no expert But from what I have read, I think it was as you say, the changing times. Due to the renewed interest in all things Viking,, the internet is full of sites on the Runes..."How to write your name in runes"..etc. But they are quite interesting.

Well to me you are as i know that you've studied a bit about them as i respect your knowledge
O.l. i'll have to look at a couple of those sites and compare Runic vs Danish or Swedish languages of today to see just how similar or dissimilar they are to each other.

If you're interested this text writes about the spiritual beliefs of the Germanic peoples before they became fully Christianized.
The reason Runic characters were replaced by the Latin Alphabet is pretty simple: The Latin Alphabet was the standard for literacy in western Europe.
Some characters from the Runic alphabet did persist in folk applications and gradually became more and more symbolic and restricted in its uses, that is, in the later middle ages carpenters and others might use a rune as a mark or a luck-charm on their work while using the Latin alphabet the sign one's name, write a letter, etc.
It was not a stretch for replacement either since the Latin alphabet and the Runic alphabets have a common origin.
