I have an interest in the use of all kinds of animals during wartime.
Dogs and horses have always fascinated me the most.
Today I was wondering if there are any armies out there who still use horses? I am not talking 3rd world countries and I am not talking about using them for ceremonies or transport but more of a "modern cavalry" if you well.
Also, if you have any good sources on animals used in war, I'd be delighted to have them.
Further to my last post and links.
If you are interested there was a documentary about the Queens Cavalry a few years ago, and a few of the episodes are on youtube.
I consider a squadron of Mongol horsemen carrying AK-47's to be a bit intimidating. Those guys were dangerous enough when they were using reflex bows and steel tipped arrows.

In looking up the info there were countless stories from military folks about the capabilities and proficiency of the Mongol soldiers. The Mongolians will send their troops all over the world to observe, train with and learn from various militaries...US, UK, France, Russia, Israel, China, etc. The story goes that man-for-man they are some of the finest soldiers on the planet.

I just see the horse as a big target for my small arm which is just as capable as his AK. He has a small advantage in tactical mobility while I have strategic mobility since an extra food source doesn't have to be carried

Not true...you have a second food source, it's called fuel. You also won't have that food source unless you have a long vulnerable logistics chain providing it for you. On his home turf, that mounted soldier holds all of the advantages strategically and tactically versus other troops.
These modern cav units are primarily used as frontier and border forces in China and Mongolia. Within that role they are the ideal unit as they are able to independently operate for months at a time. If vehicles were a better solution, they would use them.
It's interesting that all these animals are used in war; sometimes even dolphins and seals, I believe. I have heard about rats being used in bomb detection but who knows if that is really true. LOL.

Sorry, as close as I could get.
