Unfortunately the 'average' person today is not fit but instead overweight, drives everywhere and is a couch potato, people today complain if the aircon breaks down. I saw on the TV the other day that in the middle ages English long-bow archers had incredibly stong upper body strength because of the many hours pulling the long-bow and when I went to the Mary Rose (old Tudor warship) exhibition they had reconstructed a lifesize waxwork of one of the sailors found with the wreck, the write up points out that although he was only 5'8" (I think it was) he was very strong because of the heavy work on board - put it this way the waxwork had a body I would be proud of! In my opinion I reckon that 'on average' people were stronger and generally 'tougher' than we are today.
