Thanks for sharing OP. Anyway you look at it, that POS father took a vibrant fun loving young woman and destroyed her. Its almost sad she lived so long in that shell of a body and mind. I often wonder if Rose was in on it. Husband or not, he would have to kill me 1st to do that to my child! And if he did that behind my back, I'd be in prison for giving him a lobotomy myself.
I know Rose was supposedly a "wonderful" woman, but I never respected her for staying with that monster. Was her lifestyle and having the name more important to her than her daughter?
The Kennedys -- all of them -- have always displayed a self-assurance that borders on pure arrogance; what applies to the rest of us mere mortals isn't expected to apply to them. Bobby was spewing it in his last appearance before his fatal encounter in Los Angeles. For better or worse, the family's behavior in recent years has done little or nothing to dispell that image.
They certainly didn't deserve anthing that's happened to them, but they did a good deal to bring it upon themselves.

Agreed. They seemed to think they could get away with anything. Rose put up with him because she could put up with anything due to her extreme religious beliefs. Her kids loved her but often just pretended to agree with her and then did as they pleased.
As for Rosemary, we should remember that back in those days it was commonplace for someone with mental problems to be hidden away. Many were placed in institutions and given shock treatment. Their doctor may have told them that was the right thing to do for her. Usually if someone had a family member who had some mental disability, the person was never even mentioned. Sad if they didn't visit her more often though.
The Kennedy family poured Millions of dollars into the field of Mental Retardation. They never forget one of those special people was one of their own. Eunice Kennedy Shriver was the main clan leader but they all helped directly with their own money and with legislation when they could.
My wife got her Masters Degree in Maternal and Child Health Nursing (MSN) via a Kennedy Family Fellowship (Scholarship) program that Eunice managed. My wife knew, liked, and respected Eunice Shriver and all the Kennedys family did for "her people" as she called the Mentally Retarded.
Yes I had read about their contributions, Im just reading about Kicks wedding to Lord Hartington but didnt realize that Joseph Kennedy and Kicks husband were killed a month apart. Kathleen and Hartington spent less than five weeks together before he went out to fight in France. Four months after their marriage, and less than a month after Joe Jr. was killed, Hartington was killed by a sniper during a battle with the Germans in Belgium. With his family's blessing, he was buried close to where he fell. His younger brother Lord Andrew Cavendish, who was married to Deborah Mitford of the famous Mitford sisters, thus became the heir apparent to the dukedom as Hartington had left no heirs.
Popular on the London social circuit and admired by many for her high spirits and wit, Lady Hartington eventually became romantically involved with the Earl Fitzwilliam.[7] Fitzwilliam was in the process of divorcing his wife. Once again, Rose Kennedy expressed her disapproval of her daughter's suitor and warned her that she would be disowned by the family and cut off financially if she married Fitzwilliam. In May 1948, Kathleen learned that her father would be traveling to Paris. In an effort to gain his consent for her upcoming plans to marry Fitzwilliam, she decided to fly to Paris to meet with her father.
Rose refused to travel to England to see her daughter buried. Nor did any other Kennedy fly over from the U.S. Even Jack, though he said he would be there, failed to materialize in the end. He, Rose, and the others held their own memorial service in Hyannis Port. Joe, meanwhile, was the sole family member to attend the Requiem Mass. While Joe was in London, his palpable and monumental sadness did not, however, restrain him from making a pass at Billy's twenty-two-year-old-sister, Elizabeth.

She wasn't in on it; Joe did not explain to Rose what the procedure really entailed. There's a fascinating book called The Kennedy Women that's definitely worth reading.

She learned it from her own parents, unfortunately. Before she married Joe, she was in many ways a stand-in wife for her father, Honey Fitz, because her mother disliked politics and being in the public eye.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver nearly single-handedly changed how people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are treated and viewed in this country. Her accomplishments can not be over-emphasized. She was a force of nature. Her children have helped carry on her many good works. Her son, Anthony Kennedy Shriver, is the founder of Best Buddies.
Good on your wife! She's helped make a difference.

and made sure they had the photographers when they did Id imagine,
As a matter of fact.....no. The Kennedys never used Rosemary as a prop. Visits were private and not publicized.
