These folks are supposed to be taking care of us in our old age .... not quite sure where else to post this, but I don't have much hope for our future democracy with such idiots coming down the pike:

You might consider having this moved to Parenting, or perhaps discuss some how you feel this fits with History?

I've had posts moved from Parenting to other forums ... the article does have to do with teenagers lack of knowledge of history.

There are plenty of adults who don't know much about history, either. Some of them are in positions of great power who should have known how to successfully fight an insurrection or what the traditional animosities are between two different types of Muslim.

I agree with that as i work with 30 and 40 somethings who are clueless about History and Geography.

That being said i drove thru a School Zone this morning and there was a kid who looked like he was about 10 or so walking to school with a Cell Phone up to his ear. Guess i'm not surprised as these kids nowadays have so much Electronic Devices to keep them occupied.

By the way according to the USA Today story you posted what was the ''theme of 1984 '' as i'm not sure myself. Do they mean Prez Reagan beating Mondale in the election or New Wave music or maybe the Olympics that year??

I don't know, it just seems like basic knowledge of history is going by he wayside. I saw it when I was in high school. I was the only person in my senior history class who could fill out a map of the united states. And I'm not talking about capitals ... just the states!

The theme of 1984, I believe is referring to the George Orwell book. I bet none of the students surveyed would be able to name who Reagan beat in 1984, much less who Mondale's runningmate was (which is relevant today). It's just depressing to me. I try to have conversations about what is going on with other stay at home moms like me and it's nearly impossible.

Mondale's running mate was Geraldine Ferrero, now I wonder how many people would remember that, reading that article makes you wonder what they're teaching these kids in history class today.

Hey 6-3, 1984 by George Orwell. Surveillance society, "big brother", total gov't control of population. Really depressing stuff. Worst part is Orwell was kind of a visionary.

The problem with this is that now 1984 could not be classified as science fiction anymore. Or a classic cauz it seems to be very current.

I think it comes down to parenting. I learned more about History and garnered a love of it more from my mother than from school. In the morning my step-father would tell me the important news story of the day while he read the paper and I ate breakfast, at dinner (we ate dinner as a family!) we would each talk about our day then we would all watch the evening news together. My favorite family vacations were to places such as Mt. Vernon, Monticello, Williamsburg, Gettysburg, and Fredericksburg. My husband and I plan to raise our daughter much the same way.

It all comes down to parenting.
