I vaguely recall reading about this a while ago, but this story reminded of me how serious it was. I didn't know two American soldiers were killed during this incident.

A little known but scary incident from history.

How North Korean Ax Murderers Almost Triggered a Second Korean War (And Maybe World War III) | The National Interest Blog

Quote:
The American and South Korean soldiers went off to chop down a poplar tree.

Instead, they were chopped into pieces by ax-wielding North Korean soldiers. And what should have been a case of routine landscaping nearly triggered a second Korean War.

Thousands of lives could have been lost, and the Korean peninsula devastated as it had been in 1950. All because of a tree, a hot-tempered North Korean lieutenant and the most heavily armed border zone on Earth.

I do remember that at the time and there was some grainy videos taken of the incident. I don't remember it "almost triggering a second Korean War" by any stretch but there were many people pissed about it. Sadly this is simply one of many incidents where some 50 or so US soldiers have lost there life in military engagements with N. Korean forces after the formal Korean War cease fire.

This is just how it is at the DMV with 30,000 US troops constantly at the ready, been like this since the end of the war and still is like that today, and will likely remain like that until that Kim dynasty is finally taken out - probably by PRC eventually since they are getting tired of the act. Don't expect anything soon however, China has officially forbid referring to N. Korea's leader as "Kim Fatty the Third". Can't wait until my next business trip to Shanghai.
