Yeah there's that. Video streaming also can never be as reliable as having it on an actual physical disk in your presence. By their nature disks (even solid state drives for that matter) aren't subject to network lag, congestion or ISP data caps/overages. You either have it in your possession or you don't, and if you don't then you can go out (or get on Amazon) and get it, then you have it.
And like I said about dialup networking, the people that rely on it don't have a big enough pipeline to suppport streaming (except maybe audio which is a gamble at best.). I can kind of speak on that myself too since I'm on VDSL with 10Mb/s service and I usually end up downloading HD content from Youtube and playing it locally from my hard drive because it's the most reliable way (issues with their crappy HTML5 player notwithstanding) Another win for disks. Not going anywhere anytime soon.
I have thought about this, how we are moving toward not really owning media outright. I have tapes of shows I recorded back in the 80's. They are "mine" to watch if I choose. Same with VHS movies or DVD's. Now we record shows on our DVR's which go away over time and are never really "ours".
Umbrellas
Newspapers
Walkmans
Video Cassette Tapes
OK, I understand the logic on newspapers, walkmans (walkmen?) and videocassette tapes, but umbrellas? When did it stop raining? Did I miss it? Actually, when I look out the window I see that it's raining right now. Did the government of your town install a giant dome or something?
About Umbrellas, my point was that people are not carrying it that often like they used to do it in the past.
People may use umbrellas less than they used to, but umbrellas will not be obsolete as long as there is rain. Last I checked, rain still occurs.
And yes, I know what a Walkman is. But there was never a consensus on the plural.
Unless people stop having runny noses, handkerchiefs aren't obsolete either. You do realize that lots of people use regular handkerchiefs (white, cotton) for blowing the nose, right ? Not the colored kind in your outside suit coat pocket; the plain kind in your back pants pocket.
