Possibly a number fled toward the Southwestern U.S., Douglas alludes to some finding more compassion from the barbarians; but I have not come across anything to suggest in numbers greater than those that went up north via the Underground Rail Road.

Yes, escaped African American slaves did establish communities In Mexico. Costa Chica of Guerrero and Costa Chica of Oaxaca have significant populations of Afro Mexicans. Both communities also have cultural musuems about their Afro heritage.

That's ridiculous. The poster was the first to have an actual answer rather than speculation.

Both of those communities have Afro Mexican populations as a result of the slavery tradition IN Mexico, not because of escaped black American slaves.

In regards to the OP, as was shared earlier, Mexico did import African slaves itself, as did a large amount of Central and South American countries. African slaves were also taken to Middle East/Asia.

Not all black people came to populate the Americas due to escaping slavery. There actually weren't as many slaves in America as there was in the Caribbean and S. American in particular. A majority of all slaves were transported to Central and S. America during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.

On this, I agree this is ridiculous and that was not a part of the OPs question.

Many people, unfortunately, only associate the enslavement of Africans with the USA who are US citizens because, honestly, our educational system doesn't do a good job of teaching world history.

No one is blaming the "white European man" and I do not know of any "day" associated with such a connotation. That was the ridiculous part. No one here mentioned anything about "identity politics" so not sure why you even brought it up.

Will also note for the OP that not many black slaves escaped slavery at all. Those that did primarily came from the "border" states with the northern USA - states like Delaware (which did have slavery), Maryland, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Some did come from states further south, but not many.

However, there has been discovered that tens of thousands (some believe hundreds of thousands) of escaped slaves and earlier indentured servants (of all ethnic groups) escaped from slavery/servitude starting in the mid to late 1600s to the Great Dismal Swamp of VA/NC.

I recently ordered and am reading a book about "American Maroons" in the Great Dismal swamp who were primarily blacks who escaped servitude/slavery and lived for hundreds of years as free people. They eluded escape due to the environment making it hard to track or catch those who escaped.

The Great Dismal Swamp was once a refuge for runaways

Interesting comments about Florida. It should be noted that the Spainiards did not make Spain-owned Florida an escaped slave haven out of the goodness of it's heart (although certainly the Catholic's were on the forefront of the anti-slavery movement) but as a form of economic warfare on it's enemy Great Britian, as well as to settle an otherwise lightly populated colony. Slaves escaping from the British Colonies hurt the British and helped Spain. But that was only temporary, long enough to build up a couple communities, before the British took over Florida as the tides of war shifted. Most of the slaves resettled to the Caribbean to escape the return of the English slave holders. Then the British outlawed slavery, that was good as a slave haven for a few decades until the US gained Flordia (somewhere in between Spain gained control once again) and the slave business once again returned.

Well, 1829 suits me.
The enemy was the US, and Florida remained Spanish until 182...I don't quite recall.
Most scaped slaves arrived in Florida from the US, the Carolinas.
British took Florida but Spain got it back.
In fact, at that time England and Spain were worried by the US, so Spain was on the British side in the 1812 war...which led to the arrival of many maroons -cimarrones. But the main reason why Jackson invaded Spanish Florida was because Spain sheltered Creeks and Seminoles, so they could attack Scottish squatters, now called crackers.
Many Seminoles spoke Spanish until recently.

The Civil War era would be the time most conducive to the 'Anything is better than this!' motivation for the 'head for Mexico' premise, since the so-called 'freed' slaves were dying by the hundreds of thousands in the 'contraband camps' set up to keep allegedly 'free' blacks from heading north. Mexico might have looked very attractive at that point. Not many could have survived the trek though.
