Without religion, what reason would there be for any human to act in any way more civilized than any other member of the animal kingdom?

That gets philosophical but maybe we were born good, not bad. Anyway, most people who are raised to be good and kind and honest will turn out to be good and kind and honest whether they believe in God or not. Many people without religion are good people and many people with religion are terrible people. We may not need a reason; maybe we are born good naturally.

Because society works better when we're civilized, and that enhances the chances of our progeny thriving. You're familiar with the concept of natural selection, right? There it is.

Anyway, your theory is just that and nothing else. Were it so, the most religious part of the United States - the Bible Belt - would also be the part most wracked by violent crime. Secular Scandinavia would be less violent that the more religious southern Europe. The pious Middle East would be an oasis of peace compared to vastly less religious places like Canada, Japan and Australia.

But since there's nothing to your theory, none of those tests of it pan out.

You do realize, don't you, that at its Indo-European root the word for "religion" and "logic" are one and the same?

There is a reason for their passion, and passion is the reason.

"Religion" is whatever discipline you pursue to stay safe and healthy.

The rest is theatrical embellishment for whatever purpose from time to time.

"Civilized" just means in agreement about what is held to be the truth that a socety lives by. Religon bridges the gap between what is empirically knowable and what is not, in order to give the appearance of uniform understanding. So region is in fact what defines "civilization"

I heard this on a t.v show and thought of your thread:

"The greatest lie in American history is, if Nixon had confessed to doing what he did, he would not have had to resign." ~ unknown citation ~

Uh... no. That's not what civilized means.

Quote:
adjective
US /ˈsɪv·əˌlɑɪzd/

having a well-developed way of life and social systems:
“A civilized society allows for tolerance,” he said.

Civilized also means pleasant, comfortable, well-educated, or orderly:
civilized behavior
a civilized vacation

Don't waste my time ignoring the actual definitions of words in favor of definitions you've made up.

I did not pose a "theory" (which would have been a hypothesis, but I digress...); I simply posed a question..."What reason would there be".

Who defines what is civilized?

According to my dictionary (Webster's), civilized is
1. advanced in social organization and the arts and sciences
2. of people or countries thus advanced
3. cultured and courteous; refined

Why would a group of humans have reason to advance the arts and sciences or become cultured if they had no reason to not kill one another, steal from one another or otherwise commit crimes against humanity?
