Mary definitely had the stronger claim, and they did depose her father, but William was the grandson of Charles I on his mother's side, so it's not like he didn't have any hereditary claims at all, he had a very strong claim. William and Mary were 1st cousins.

There was another Stuart who was a first cousin (once removed) who had a stronger claim to the English throne; (Mary, Queen of Scots) who landed in England, and I presume you know how that sad decision ended.
