In an even that shocked the royal courts of Europe, an anointed sovereign, Mary, Queen of Scots was executed. The warrant was signed by her own cousin, Elizabeth I of England who claimed to her dying days that she was *duped* and *innocent* of her royal cousin's death as "God may judge me".
There have been many films and television series based upon Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots. Nothing beats the BBC television series from 1970's starring the great Glenda Jackson; Elizabeth R.
The best film (IMHO) is the 1971 "Mary, Queen of Scots) starring Vanessa Redgrave and (again) Glenda Jackson. Film though taking obvious great lengths with historical accuracy does get much correct. Even though the two queens never met, they did write to each other. Those letters are still part of the historical archives in Parliament and were used as the source to base much of the screenplay.
