So what made Pinochet pick 9/11? I don't think he was a Muslim.

We don't. America functions as a corporate oligarchy.

300,000 Ottoman Muslim were repelled by maybe 100,000 Christians. Fact is, they were just out maneuvered by Polish king Jan Sobieski, who saved the day.
Vienna, 1683, is to Muslims what Gettysburg is to Southerners. That is as far as they got.

Does anyone else think this is the reason that Sep 11th was picked for the US bombings? Anyone seen anything written about it?
The battle was lost on Sep 12, but begun on Sep 11.
I thought it was picked because of the symbolism of calling 911 for emergencies.

Popular theory, but I always thought it was a little limp. Could have just been just coincidental, for that matter.
I've never seen where someone with firsthand knowledge ever told us.

Or incidental. Like, "Hey, let's pick this Tuesday because of emptier planes, etc., and oh lookie, it's 911 besides."

The US is a republic, not a democracy. If we can keep it.

Islam isn't a singular monolith the same way Christianity isn't a single monolith. The Ottomans were Turks who happen to be Sunni Muslims. Their invasion into the Balkans wasn't religiously motivated, it was politically motivated. The 9/11 hijackers were mostly Saudis, who historically have had a very hostile relationship with the Turks, in spite of the fact both are Sunnis. They even sided with the British against the Ottomans in the First World War. I struggle to think Osama Bin Laden has any degree of fondness for the Ottoman Empire, let alone a desire to avenge their loss at the Battle of Vienna.

Perhaps ObL was honoring Pete Rose, who broke Ty Cobb's all-time hits record on September 11, 1985.

That seems only slightly less likely than wanting the day to match the American emergency phone number, or the anniversary of some event that really had no particular relevance to ObL's grievance about the American presence, both physically and politically, in the Middle East.

The two terms are not mutually exclusive. The United States is both a republic and a democracy.

I found this, which indicates the exact date was picked in late August. It looks like the date 9/11 was picked at random and just happened to coincide with the Muslim zenith at Vienna.
The timeline is an interesting read. The hijackers were nearly caught several times as they formed the plan and obtained training...
First ticket was purchased on Aug 25.

August 25-September 5, 2001: 9/11 Hijackers Spend Over $30,000 on 9/11 Tickets

All the 9/11 hijackers book their flights for September 11, 2001, using their apparent real names. The total cost of the tickets is in excess of $30,000:
August 25: Khalid Almihdhar, who was watchlisted two days previously (see August 23, 2001),.......
Complete 911 Timeline: Mohamed Atta
