The three men I admire most
The father, son and the holy ghost

Sorry, that song popped into my head when I saw this post.

No politicians made my list. Mine are mostly inventors, explorers, adventurers, heroes, Indian chiefs and even a few outlaws. If I had to narrow it down to just one person, it might be this guy. We all should admire him.

Default Joan of Arc

She is easily and by far the most extraordinary person the human race has ever produced.

She is the only person, of either sex, who has ever held supreme command of the military forces of a nation at the age of seventeen

Or a terrorist. Hard to tell. I don’t think the Pottawottomie Massacre makes him much of a hero.

No contest -- Abraham Lincoln -- only Washington, who rejected the role of a strongman, in return for that of a nation-builder, comes close.

But Lincoln was a simple lawyer from a less-developed region of the nation, drawn by the forces of his day, into his nation's most troubled times.

He was, at heart, a man of principle; but when forced to do so, did not hesitate to suspend the rules of civility in order to preserve the underlying framework for the rule of law over the long run, (and which he likely would have rescinded much sooner).

And had an assassin's bullet not cut his days short, his experience as a native of a fragile border state would have better suited him for the task of recovery from his country's greatest tragedy; not so for the hatemongers who followed, and damaged his legacy.

He was, in short, an embodiment of the ideals which have nurtured, guided, and preserved the American Experiment.
