Pretty amazing story, I hadn't heard of this car maker. There is a lot of misinformation out there though. One YouTube video has many errors so I didn't post a link.
If one Google's around they might also find outrageously false claims that there was a thriving black Auto maker decades before Ford existed. Patently false. To clarify,
1896: Ford creates his first self powered motor vehicle
1899: Ford founds Detroit Auto Company (later Cadillac)
1903: Ford Motor Company is founded
1915: Patterson's Company switched from horse carriages to cars and ultimately builds less than 150 units before switching to bus chassis and sadly eventually going out of business in 1939.
It’s hard to imagine in the days of segregation and anti black prejudice how African Americans managed to actually create and sustain successful business even in the short term. Struggle and perseverance. Forgotten history that deserves more attention.
It was originally 1 white guy and 1 black guy. It's in the links.
Saying that African Americans created the business is not accurate and really does, in my opinion, discredit the man, his family, and his legacy, whatever that may be.
