The Russian stove/oven was a brilliant invention! It's ideal for keeping even relatively large houses warm in the deep Russian winters. I've seen them built in such a way, that there's a sort of duct that extends from it into the far reaches of the house, built into the wall of a long hallway. All the rooms get heat this way. This is very similar to the ancient Manchu "radiant heat" system built into the floors of traditional houses. The firs was fed at one end, and a sort of tunnel extended under the whole house, carrying the heat to all the rooms. There are still a few of these houses remaining on the Chinese side of the border in Manchuria.

I'm surprised the Swedes and Norwegians never figured this out, especially in the north. Old Swedish cabins only had a central fireplace.

Do Russia overall have to "contribute" something to the West? It may be better for Russia to stand next to West as the East, as an alternative to the former. Both East and West are equally good. I may be naive and ignorant but one of the reasons I like them is that they are an alternative to the West. It is better to live in a world with alternatives than to be dominated by only one entity. Personally, for me, the word 'west' has never meant something self-evidently "better" or "superior", oh, no. The east is where the onion-shaped church domes are, and there's nothing wrong with that.
