Its melee combat, so there is a much skill involved. It be a matter of pride. Also potential morale booster or destroyer for your army.

Remember even the Knights of early to late Medievel Period had 1v1 duels to settle matters. Aaron Burr, and Al Hamilton dueled too. Kids fist fought in school up to the early 90s.
