Seriously, they act like a woman constantly going through a permanent case of the worst PMS ever over it. Just some small tiny island. Why do they continue to waste time being so damn obstinate about it? Why do they care so damn much?

Because the "Taiwanese" lost the civil war, but still managed to plunder the country of their art treasures and gold reserves; hence, the Communists still want payback.

It ultimately boils down to the One China policy, which entails that mainland China and Taiwan are a single entity.

This.

China cares, because ever since Mao's Revolution, Taiwan has one-upped China in a major way, by getting the US and a group of other countries to recognize "just some small tiny island" as the official "China" (Republic of China, ROC, aka Taiwan). Taiwan ever humiliated China by getting admitted to the UN as THE one China.

No wonder China's as angry as a disturbed hornet's nest. Even after booting Taiwan out of the UN, and taking its place, they're still hopping mad.

This seems like a better fit for the asia/politics category, we have 2 Taiwanese members btw way more informed than other posters commenting and in any case I feel about them the way I feel about HK, Barcelona or Crimea: whatever the majority there wants.

It’s a twofold thing.

1) Getting China unified under a single banner.

2) Enforcing their authority. If they let the Taiwan issue slide, they feel that their global position gets undermined.

Wow, China really is ruled by the most megalomaniac insecure crybabies ever, aren't they? Just crazy to me how the kind of people that got beat up all the time in high school for being little ******* manage to rule a country.

Basically this is how they are all the time:

Because Americans doesn't get it. Taiwan is like an open wound to them. If they don't take control of it, many Chinese would love to move there instead of being on Mainland. It's got better living standards than China, it's got open elections, and more freedom of speech and you can practice religion there safely. Taiwan has better food and it's the home of the bubble tea.

Because they've incorporated this "reunification" agenda into the legitimacy of their regime. It's a decades-long propaganda that they can't afford to toss. That's the real reason.
