Dean Martin's fame came from being the straight man for Jerry Lewis. Martin & Lewis were a big time comedy act during the 50's and 60's until they had a falling out and went their separate ways. Jerry Lewis failed as a single act and Dean succeded as a variety show entertainer with popular guests of the time.
It was pure entertainment at the time and and most people then liked those types of variety shows. Those shows then were not as phony as the current breed of shows.

Believe me, I am strictly heterosexual, but I did think Dean Martin was a very handsome man.

From one macho man to another -- what the heck's a croissant?
