This is an obscure American holiday commemorating the exit of British forces from New York in 1783.



Last year, when my family visited the city for Thanksgiving, my historian daughter wanted to see Federal Hall and we stumbled on the observance by sheer, dumb luck. There were re-enactors galore and readings of important documents. It was one of the highlights of our trip.

In Massachusetts, Evacuation Day is March 17th, commemorating the British withdrawal from Boston in 1776.
