A small aluminum capsule was found, with a German message, which is guessed to be lost from a WWI carrier pigeon a century ago.

Just a side note about carrier pigeons in WW1. The French used 5,000 pigeons at Verdun and only 3% of them failed to return. The birds fared far better than the soldiers.

Both articles say the note was probably sent during military exercises in 1910, not during WWI.

I heard radio carbon dating has it as originating from early 1912 and mentioned a special shipment on the maiden voyage of a White Star Line cruise ship...
