While the OP is exaggerating the negative aspects of US history, old outdated US history textbooks are biased in the other direction. They present a whitewashed version of American history that glosses over or omits some unpleasant truths. An example of this is in California schools we were taught that the Spanish missions were the wonderful, glorious expansion of civilization that tamed the savage natives. In truth Fr. Junipero Serra was a cruel and harsh slavemaster, ripping able-bodied natives out of their villages and putting them into forced labor camps. Schools also glorified the Gold Rush but omitted the state-sanctioned genocide against indigenous people; Gov. Burnett in 1851: "That a war of extermination will continue to be waged … until the Indian race becomes extinct, must be expected." The state government then paid nearly $1 million in bounties to civilians who killed natives.

I went to public school and my grasp of history is just fine. How about we don't make snobby assumptions and lump everyone who went to a public school into the same ignorant group as the OP?

Thread closed. There is no indication it was started in an honest attempt to learn something about American History.
