I just heard about this, concert-goers at the Berlin Philharmonic being offered cyanide in the waning days of Nazi Germany.


The other brave musicians stayed to face their own Twilight of the Gods. As the audience left they were offered cyanide capsules (suicide pills) from baskets held by children wearing Hitler Youth uniforms.

There was a wave of suicides throughout Germany as the Russians pushed westward across the border. Numbers are unclear but they were in the thousands. Rapes and murders of German civilians by Russians in border towns were widely reported.
