In 1864, confederate forces under General Buford Forrest overran Union held Fort Pillow in TN. Many of the 600 Union troops were black, about 300 were killed. Confederates losses were only 14 killed.
It may be obvious from the one sided casualties and the race of the defenders of the fort, but confederate forces contend that the union troops never lowered the fort flag, thus never indicating surrender, and would drop weapons at one moment, and then pick them up and fire again at confederate troops, and then repeat the process of mock surrender.
